2026 Volkswagen Tiguan vs 2026 Mazda CX-5: Compact SUVs Compared in British Columbia
Shoppers across British Columbia cross-shopping compact SUVs this year keep circling back to the same two names: the 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan and the 2026 Mazda CX-5. Both come standard with all-wheel drive and seat five, and both are built for the daily commute plus the odd loaded-up weekend trip.
Where they split is under the skin. The Tiguan offers two distinct engines and a noticeably deeper cargo hold, while the CX-5 keeps things simple with one 2.5L engine across its entire lineup. Here is how the two actually compare.

Two Engines vs. One: Powertrain Choice
The Tiguan lineup splits into two powertrains. Trendline, Comfortline, and Comfortline R-Line Black run a 2.0L turbocharged four making 201 hp and 221 lb-ft. The Highline Turbo R-Line steps up to 268 hp and 258 lb-ft from the same 2.0L block, a 67-hp jump over the standard engine.
The CX-5 runs a single 2.5L SKYACTIV-G engine across the GX, GS, and GT, producing 187 hp and 186 lb-ft, paired with a 6-speed automatic. Every Tiguan engine, including the base one, produces more torque than the CX-5's 186 lb-ft, which matters more than horsepower for merging onto the highway or pulling away from a stop on a grade.
The CX-5 holds a small combined-economy edge at 9.0 L/100 km. The Tiguan's standard engine ranges from 9.2 to 9.3 L/100 km depending on trim, and even the 268-hp Highline Turbo only adds 0.2-0.3 L/100 km more at 9.5 L/100 km, while delivering 81 more hp and 72 more lb-ft than the CX-5. The Tiguan also runs an 8-speed automatic, two more gears than the CX-5's 6-speed, keeping the engine closer to its sweet spot at highway speeds.
Cargo, Towing, and Real-World Capability
Cargo is where the gap widens. The Tiguan's 2,843 L of cargo volume outclasses the CX-5's 1,882 L by 961 L, room that adds up fast with strollers, hockey bags, or a loaded bike rack. The Tiguan's max towing, at 1,800 lbs (816 kg), also outpaces the CX-5's 1,500 lbs (680 kg), and the base Trendline carries a 460 kg payload rating.
The CX-5 does sit higher off the ground, with 204-209 mm of ground clearance against the Tiguan's 179-183 mm. But the Tiguan's approach angle (up to 18.4°), departure angle (25.2°), and breakover angle (up to 21.5°) all clear the CX-5's 17.9-18.3° approach, 23.6-24° departure, and 16.8-17.2° breakover angles, so the Tiguan's nose and underbody clear obstacles the CX-5's taller stance doesn't fully offset.
Interior Space and Cabin Tech
The CX-5's front seats do offer more room on paper: 1,058 mm of legroom against the Tiguan's 1,022 mm, plus a slight edge in headroom and shoulder room. Where the Tiguan answers back is premium cabin materials and standard high-end tech features on the Highline Turbo R-Line:
• Open-pore genuine walnut wood décor • Quilted leather seating surfaces • Ventilated front seats with a massage function • 30-colour customizable ambient lighting • 360° area-view camera and head-up display, both standard
The CX-5's closest match to that last point sits behind an extra-cost Premium Package on the GT trim, which also requires the panoramic roof option before it unlocks the 360° View Monitor, Driver Monitoring, and the CX-5's largest 15.6-inch touchscreen. The Tiguan's 15-inch touchscreen and 12-speaker Harman Kardon system come with the Highline Turbo trim itself, no bundled options required.
Both brands land in the same place on top-tier audio, with the CX-5 GT's 12-speaker Bose system matching the Tiguan's speaker count.
Who the 2026 Tiguan Fits Best
Families hauling gear for weekend trips get the most out of the Trendline or Comfortline 4MOTION, where the 201-hp engine, 2,843 L cargo hold, and 1,800-lb tow rating cover most weekend loads without stepping up to the top trim. Drivers who want sharper acceleration for highway merging or mountain grades get there with the Highline Turbo R-Line's 268 hp and 258 lb-ft.
Buyers who want camera, display, and lighting tech included in the trim rather than tucked into an optional package also land on the Tiguan. The CX-5's single 187-hp engine keeps its lineup simple, but it doesn't give a buyer the option to trade a bit of fuel economy for real power the way the Tiguan does.
Test Drive the 2026 Tiguan in Chilliwack
The 2026 Tiguan pairs a larger cargo hold and higher tow rating with a two-engine lineup, giving buyers a wider range of practicality and power than a single-engine compact SUV can offer.
