Winter Tires in BC
Starting on October 1st, drivers will be required to have winter tires on the majority of B.C. highways. Are you ready? Do you have the winter tires you need to get where you need to go safely? If you are caught without proper winter tires you could face a fine of $109 and you may be required to turn around, preventing you from reaching your destination.
Winter tire regulations are from October 1st- March 30th, but they have been extended to April in certain B.C. mountain passes in past years.
There are two types of approved winter tires:
- Mountain and Snow Tires (3 peaked mountain and snowflake symbol)
-used in an area where you expect regular snow, ice and slush.
-these winter tires offer better traction in harsh winter conditions.
- Mud and Snow Tires (M&S symbol and at least 3.5 mm of tread)
-these tires are a good option only if you have winter conditions on a limited basis.
Ensuring that you have proper winter tires is extremely important; it could save your life as well as others. If you do get into an accident where winter tires could have helped, not having them may affect whether or how much you may be at fault.
Be sure to keep an eye on the tread-wear indicators on your winter tires. If you aren’t sure about how much life is left on your winter tires, come in to Chilliwack Volkswagen and someone will be happy to help you! Always ensure that you use the same type of tires (summer, winter, or all season) on all four wheels. This will provide you with the safety you need, and the tires will be more efficient and will do their job properly.
Always keep your tires properly inflated; this is one of the most important parts of tire care. Check your tires when they are cold, the temperature will affect your tire pressure as it will drop in colder weather.
Make sure you store your winter tires properly, so they will last longer, providing you with more value out of your investment. Keep them in a cool, dry and indoor location. If you store them still mounted, reduce the tire pressure to 15 PSI and re-inflate when you’re ready to use them again. Do you need somewhere to store your tires? Contact us at Chilliwack Volkswagen and we can provide you with some storage options.
